On Sunday morning, volunteers gathered in Chinatown to replace the lanterns. This marks the seventh year that these vibrant lanterns have brightened the blue sky above Chinatown. The lanterns not only enhance the neighborhood’s distinctive character but also serve as a constant reminder of the Chinese American community’s enduring presence and contributions.
The second week of lantern replacement in Chinatown coincided with passing showers, but that didn’t slow anyone down. Each of the six volunteers worked tirelessly—about four hours non-stop—to complete all the lanterns along 4th Avenue. One mother in particular stood out, single-handedly replacing 17 lanterns. We fondly called her the most industrious volunteer (最拼义工) in the history of Chinatown’s lantern project.
