PPS: Woodstock Elementary School
History and Overview
PPS has offered Chinese Dual Language Immersion Programs for more than two decades.
Woodstock Elementary offered the first Chinese Immersion program in 1998. Students at Woodstock continue to Hosford Middle School and go on to Cleveland High School for advanced level courses.
In 2014, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School began offering Chinese Immersion in response to parents who wanted a pathway for their children who had attended the Chinese Immersion preschool program through Albina HeadStart. In the fall of 2019, the inaugural class of MLK Jr. students moved on to 6th - 8th grades at Harriet Tubman Middle School. In the 2022-2023 school year, the students went on to Jefferson High School.
Our newest school that offers a Chinese Immersion program is Harrison Park K-8 in Southeast Portland. The program started in 2016, and the students moved on to middle school in the 2022-2023 school year.
School District Dual Language PreK - 12 Programs
The goals of the Dual Language Program in Portland Public Schools are to ensure bilingualism and biliteracy, grade-level academic achievement, and social-cultural competency for every student we serve, particularly for our students of color and Emergent Bilinguals.
Dual Language programs prioritize closing the opportunity gap for historically underserved students. To this end, DL provides multiple pathways and entry points for students to become bilingual and biliterate with a variety of programs offered to support the diversity of levels of proficiency in the partner languages. Students who participate in these programs and reach a high level of academic language proficiency qualify for the Seal of Biliteracy awarded by the State of Oregon.
